El Cabezo is a farmhouse near San Martín de Trevejo which I certainly recommend if you’re looking for accommodation in Sierra de Gata. This stunning property has views to the mountain, a rooftop area, a patio, parking space, Wi-Fi, and serves a 10/10 breakfast.

Here are my impressions of my stay:
The room
I booked a double en suite room on the ground floor, next to the main entrance. It was big, and clean, with a comfortable bed, a fireplace, and two armchairs. Everything had a rustic feel – from a wall of exposed stone to red terracotta floor tiles and wooden shutters. Traditional details such as a small camilla table, an oval metal framed mirror and bulrush little chairs and stools completed the rural look.
Breakfast
I can confidently say that this is was the best breakfast I’ve been served in Extremadura so far, both in terms of quantity and quality. Everything was fresh, local, homemade or straight from the garden. The first day I had: fresh orange juice, coffee and Nesquik, slices of toast with homemade salmorejo (tomato-based spread), local goat’s cheese with homemade jam, yoghurt, fresh fruit, a selection of traditional biscuits and homemade cake. Everything looked so tasty that I tried a bit of everything available and ended up absolutely stuffed. Miguel, one of the owners, popped out and brought back figs from the garden. On the second day, I had my slices of toast with creamy torta cheese and some more with homemade blackberry jam. The cake was different, too (spongy carrot cake).
The house
El Cabezo is a family-owned farmhouse turned casa rural some twenty years ago. The owners told me this was one of the first rural accommodation properties opening up around here, after the government launched a development programme to promote tourism in Sierra de Gata.
The property comprises several buildings organised around a central patio. The former family house is the only part that hasn’t been fully refurbished yet. Former stables are now ground-floor guest rooms, and stairs leading up to a nice little rooftop terrace with chairs and a hammock from which to enjoy the mountain views. Outside the rooms there is a covered area where you can sit and relax.
The third building is home to several guest rooms, a cosy living room – with sofas, a fireplace and lots of travel magazines –, the breakfast room, and the kitchen.
Apart from the owners and a couple with a small child staying in the house, I also met some other guests – a sleepy cat, a dog and four cute month-old puppies.
The location
El Cabezo is perfect for one of those middle-of-nowhere quiet stays, which is exactly why we booked it. It’s located just off the road EX-205, which crosses northern Extremadura from east (Hervas) to west (into Portugal). There are several towns within a 10-km radius from the property: Valverde del Fresno, Eljas, San Martín de Trevejo, Villamiel. This makes it a good starting point for exploring the area, sightseeing, swimming in natural pools (in summer) and walking (not in summer).
